APN 01 The Renin Angiotensin System (RAS) is a major regulator in human physiology. It controls important functions such as blood pressure, volume and electrolytes, and affects the function of most organs. Key effectors are Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) and the vasoconstrictor peptide Ang II. ACE inhibitors and Ang II receptor blockers have been developed by many pharmaceutical companies, to treat hypertension, heart failure and progressive renal damage, and cover huge markets. Recently, a different and counter-regulating axis of the RAS was detected, mediated by Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2). It's main function is to cleave the key effector peptide Ang II to create Ang(1-7) which has opposite functions. Apeiron develops a recombinant, well soluble, highly glycosylated form of human ACE2 (rhACE2; project name: APN 01) for parenteral application. Target indications of this ACE2 enhancement therapy are diseases and conditions with an imbalance of the RAS system and insufficient natural ACE2 activity such as
